According to AHETA - Associação dos Hotéis e Empreendimentos Turísticos do Algarve the tourism industry experienced a surprising increase in August 2010, exceeding the numbers verified in August 2009.
The Association states that the accommodation rate per room reached in August 92,5%, which surpassed in 2,2% the value registered during the same period last year.
The areas with the most important increases were Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra with 4,3%, Vilamoura, Quarteira and Quinta do Lago with 3,5% and Albufeira with 2,9%.
The area of Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António registered in fact the highest accommodation rates: 97,1%
By categories, the highest growth rates were registered on villas and on the 4 and 5 stars touristic apartments (increase 12,5%), hotels and 3 stars apart hotels registered an increase of 2,8%. On the other hand the 2 and 3 stars touristic apartments had a decrease of 2,3%.
The main markets to choose the Algarve as a touristic destination has suffered also a change in opposition to last year’s statistics: + 2,1% of national tourists, + 28,3% of Spanish visitors and +7,6% of Dutch tourists. The British market had a reduction of 2,7% and the Irish had a break of 33,4%.
